He died for the opportunity”—
i saw this on someone’s license plate the other day, and i was a bit perturbed.
it makes it sound like Jesus is dying for followers, like the people have the upper hand. and as though Jesus is desperate and needy.
i think this is the trouble with current christians in america. we follow Jesus out of convenience. or as if we’re doing God a favor by becoming a believer.
how sadly mistaken we are if we think this way.
Jesus was the one who said, “if you’re not ready to pay the cost of becoming my follower, then don’t” (paraphrased. for exact verses, Luke 9:57-62). He doesn’t lose much if we don’t follow him.
We, on the other hand, have everything to lose.
So perhaps the slogan should be changed— Jesus died to give you the opportunity to meet him.
You shouldn’t let such a priceless opportunity pass you by.
